Big Island Yoga Center is holding a New Year’s Day celebration featuring five free hourlong classes beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Participants of all skill levels are invited to attend one or more sessions.

Big Island Yoga Center is holding a New Year’s Day celebration featuring five free hourlong classes beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Participants of all skill levels are invited to attend one or more sessions.

“Breathing for Peace: Meditation and Pranayama” starts at 8 a.m. “Surya Namaskar, Sun Salutations,” follows at 10 a.m. “Freeing the Hips” is slated for noon. “Exploring Feet, Hands and Wrists” begins at 2 p.m. “Restorative,” the final class, begins at 4 p.m.

Talk story and light refreshments will be shared between classes. Drawings for a “Yoga Woman” DVD are planned. Copies of the film about the impact of yoga on a woman’s health, fitness and emotional well-being will also be available for $15. Proceeds from DVD sales benefit the nonprofit center.

First-time students should arrive 15 minutes early to register. The form is available online and may be printed and brought to class.

Grant writing workshop scheduled for Jan. 7, 8

The Hawaii County Department of Research and Development and Grant Writing USA will present a workshop Jan. 7 and 8 in Hilo. Participants will learn how to find grants and write winning proposals.

Tuition is $425 and includes a workbook and accompanying resource CD. Seating is limited; online reservations are necessary.

Multienrollment and Grant Writing USA alumni discounts are available. Payment is not required at the time of enrollment.
